Restaurant Hjem at Fenwick
We are bringing one of the most celebrated restaurants in the North East to Fenwick Newcastle.
Hjem will be in residency from 31st May until 31st December, inviting foodies from Newcastle and beyond to experience its famous flavours and signature style of cooking.
The menu will emphasise local and seasonal produce, but with a twist. There will also be a frequently-changing tasting menu, all served by a dedicated team in a relaxed setting. Featuring signature Hjem dishes including their chicken liver parfait with brioche & Pedro Ximenez syrup, suckling pig, red onion and sriracha rostis, and gougères filled with brie and cranberry. For dessert, you can enjoy a Swedish rice pudding with gingerbread or a pick & mix of Hjem-made desserts from their Swedish sweet trolley. Don’t worry, the team will also be able to cater to dietary requirements.
Founded by husband and wife team, Alex Nietosvuori and Ally Thompson-Nietosvuori, Hjem’s blend of fresh North East produce and traditional Scandinavian cooking has won it a Michelin star in 2021– making it the first Michelin-starred restaurant in Northumberland. After spending 20 years gaining experience across some of the top restaurants in Scandinavia and the UK, the couple felt ready to start realising their ambition of opening their own restaurant against a stunning Northumberland backdrop.
Located in the small village of Wall, Hjem (pronounced "yem") is both a Northumbrian and Scandinavian word for "home”. Tucked away within the popular pub, The Hadrian at Wall, the 28-seat restaurant is not the easiest venue to get to, and if you could, tables are notoriously difficult to book.
Ally has grown up with Fenwick as the go-to shopping destination in the centre of town. Hjem and the store share a lot of values, most notably quality of produce and the highest standards of service. Hjem is a small business in a secluded part of the region, the residency is an opportunity to marry both brand's matching values and bring Hjem's corner of Northumberland to Central Newcastle. For Alex, the partnership means being able to cook for people who might not ordinarily choose or be able to visit Hjem in Northumberland. Being able to continue supporting small and local businesses and be part of a national department store is also exciting.
