Bill's - Islington

Just off Upper Street, pretty much opposite Angel tube, Bill's Islington has a really welcoming feel from the moment you step through the door. Formerly an office, we started with a blank canvas and transformed the interior to create a real Bill's vibe. With plenty of seating inside, there's also a little yard and seating along the front of the restaurant for warmer days. During the summer, we open the concertina doors along the front for that inside/outside feel. A popular restaurant, it has a great buzz during the day and a more intimate feel at night. Bill Collison, founder of Bill's, opened the first Bill's in Lewes, East Sussex, in 2001. Built on the same site where Bill had been running a successful greengrocery for several years, Bill's Café & Produce Store, as it was then known, was an instant success. The aim was to make a place that was colourful and exuberant, with dishes that were really tasty and also made you smile, that put every day and unusual seasonal ingredients together and gave everyone lots of ideas to take home with them. The team at Bill's baked, cooked and served deliciously different food, hung skeins of raffia from the ceiling, stacked towers of produce for people to buy and hired lively, enthusiastic staff to look after their customers. They wanted Bill's to be somewhere that really celebrated food and was welcoming to everyone, a place that felt like the next best thing to home. Breakfast at Bills is a great way to start your day; from a humble bacon or sausage sandwich to a bells-and-whistles super classic great British breakfast. Weekends are a different story, time to kick back and turn breakfast into brunch, complete with newspapers, freshly squeezed orange juice and plenty of tea or coffee.

My friend and I went for a meal here recently. Given the current situation it was relatively quiet and we were shown to our table as soon as we arrived. Unfortunately there was a very big Great Dane dog by the bar owned by one of the customers which was slightly off-putting especially as the owner would let go of its lead every now and then and it would come towards our table. Don’t get me wrong, I like dogs but not in a restaurant and especially not those the size of a small horse!! Given this we did ask to move tables to get away from the onlooking dog and the staff totally understood our concerns and we moved tables. Not sure what would’ve happened if the restaurant had been busy? The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and attentive so we can’t complain about that side of the evening. However given the bar is in the same space as the restaurant I would suggest the venue re-thinks where dogs should be allowed and ensure they are kept on their lead at all times.

Firstly, to say I love the surroundings at 185 and am usually more than happy with my meal. On Sunday the beef was lovely, very tender, cannot fault. The Yorkshire puddings were in my opinion more than a little overdone and the “roast potatoes” were very disappointing. Service was faultless though.

We were really disappointed with the quality of the food at 185. We ordered simple food ‘burgers and the salmon ‘ they were poorly presented dry and the salmon salad was watery and tasteless. Definitely gone downhill - atmosphere was also dire. Not been to 185 for some time and it’s dramatically gone downhill so won’t be back

Drinks and ambiance good but food a let down

Convenient place to meet but sadly 185 had gone down since the early days. New lunch menu but cooking not so good. Great place to meet for drinks and a chat with friends but not for the food.
