Paul Kitching’s 21212

Paul Kitching's 21212 opened in Edinburgh in May 2009. It has received rave reviews and numerous awards including a Michelin Star in 2010. It is Edinburgh's only Michelin starred restaurant with rooms. 21212 sits in a listed Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh's Royal Terrace. Set over four floors, it is light, spacious and airy. It is also elegant, sumptuously decorated and enjoys commanding views to the Firth of Forth and beyond from the upper level rooms. As well as the 38 seat restaurant with open kitchen, there's a drawing room, two private dining areas and four luxury bedrooms. Many of the period features have been retained, complemented by contemporary lighting and designer furnishing. Paul Kitching has stayed true to his contemporary French cooking style but has added a unique approach to his menu combinations. Though the menu never has more than three choices for any course, variety is achieved by having a new menu each week. Even regular guests have something new to experience on their next visit. Price wise, it is accessible too, with two course lunches starting at just £22 on weekdays. The restaurant's extensive wine list means there is something to suit every palate. Private dining: ATE is the largest private dining area, capable of seating up to ten guests and has been designed with a distinctly different feel to the main restaurant. The traditional fireplace, cornicing, Georgian door frames and skirting blend perfectly with the contemporary lighting, which includes a stunning porcelain butterfly light pendent. Furniture is Italian and the room is finished by a carpet designed by Timorous Beastie. ATE offers a unique dining experience, and the tranquillity of garden views. The Pod is ideal for smaller parties of up to six people. Adjacent to the Drawing Room, and separated by a fine veil, the semi private dining room features a wall length image of Caravaggio's The Seven Works of Mercy. The circular cream leather banquette and pink marble table make the Pod an experience not to be missed. Guests can also enjoy an aperitif before dinner in the drawing room or relax after their meal with a coffee and an after dinner liqueur. Situated on the first floor, the Drawing Room commands excellent views across Royal Terrace and its gardens to The Firth of Forth and beyond. The room has been lovingly restored retaining many of the original fixtures and fittings, as well as a few new contemporary touches. 1212 has four, beautifully appointed, large bedrooms, each with a dedicated lounge area. The rooms are on the two upper levels of the house, and offer commanding views over the gardens to the rear, or the city of Edinburgh to the front.
